Thalaivaa Movie Review




Thalaivaa (transl. The Leader) is a 2013 Indian Tamil-language action thriller film written and directed by A. L. Vijay. It stars Vijay in the title role, along with Amala Paul, Sathyaraj, Santhanam, Abhimanyu Singh, and others. The film, produced by Chandraprakash Jain, features background score and soundtrack composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar with cinematography and editing handled by Nirav Shah and Anthony respectively. The story revolves around a dancer who takes over his father's duty as a crime boss after his death.

The film was released on 8 August 2013 on the occasion of Eid-ul Fitr. The film received mostly positive reviews from critics and audience. The film was successful at the overseas box office and also in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka box office. However, due to opposition from the ruling AIADMK as insisted by the then Chief minister J Jayalalithaa, the film had a delayed release in Tamil Nadu on 20 August 2013 and its performance was affected at the Tamil Nadu box office.


Plot




The film opens in the year 1988 with the death of Mumbai's King of Dharavi (Asia biggest slum) Varadarajan Mudaliar. Following his death, the rival group goes on a rampage and we are introduced to Anna (Sathyaraj) who takes the job of protecting Varadarajan's Dharavi in his hands and letting his son Vishwa (Vijay) to be brought up in Australia. Over there he leads a dance troop and falls in love with Meera (Amala Paul). Later, Vishwa finds that Meera is a Mumbai cop and she pretends to be in love with him just to know about the locality of his father. His father is later killed by the scums of Mumbai and how Vishwa avenges his father's death and how he leads the Dharavi people forms the rest of the story.

The soundtrack album consists of six tracks composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar. The lyrics were written by Na. Muthukumar, except for "Vaanganna Vanakkanganna", which was written by Vijay himself.

Reception




The film received mostly positive reviews from critics. Sify rated the film 4 out of 5 stars and called it "a well-made commercial entertainer".[10] The Times of India gave the film 3.5 out of 5 stars and praised Vijay's performance, saying that "he is in top form, both as the dancer and the leader".[11] Rediff also gave the film 3.5 out of 5 stars and wrote that "Thalaivaa is a gripping thriller with a strong message".[12] The Hindu called the film "a fairly engaging political thriller".[13] Behindwoods rated the film 3 out of 5 stars and stated that "Thalaivaa is a neat commercial package from Vijay and Vijay".[14]


However, some critics felt that the film was too long and had a weak screenplay. Deccan Chronicle gave the film 2.5 out of 5 stars and said that "the film suffers from a weak script and poor execution".[15] Oneindia also gave the film 2.5 out of 5 stars and commented that "the movie fails to impress due to its slow pace and predictable plot".[16] Indiaglitz rated the film 2.25 out of 5 stars and criticized the film for being "a letdown in terms of story, screenplay and direction".[17]


Box office




The film was released in over 1,200 screens worldwide. The film grossed 13 crore (US$1.8 million) on its opening day in India.[18] The film collected 45 crore (US$6.3 million) in its first weekend worldwide.[19] The film grossed 100 crore (US$14 million) in its lifetime worldwide.[20]


The film was successful at the overseas box office, especially in Malaysia, where it grossed over 20 crore (US$2.8 million).[21] The film also did well in other countries like Singapore, Sri Lanka, UK, USA, Australia, and UAE.[22]


However, the film faced a delayed release in Tamil Nadu due to political issues. The film was released on 20 August 2013 in Tamil Nadu after getting clearance from the Madras High Court.[23] The film opened to mixed response from the audience and was affected by piracy and new releases.[24] The film collected 35 crore (US$4.9 million) in Tamil Nadu.[25]


Awards




The film won one award at the 61st Filmfare Awards South for Best Choreography (Shobi Paulraj for "Vaanganna Vanakkanganna").[26] The film was also nominated for four other awards: Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor (Vijay), and Best Music Director (G.V.Prakash Kumar).[27]
